Disposable or Not?

So my friend posted a blog about using non-disposable diapers for her baby and was wanting feedback from her friends. Reading her post and all her friends comments, I got to thinking about maybe not using disposable diapers? I know there are pros and cons for both sides, so bring on the comments. I would love to get some feedback on your opinions of both.

I LOVE the idea of using non-disposable diapers and not contributing to landfill waste, but you have to remember what ALL it entails. LOTS more poop up the back, the babes get diaper rashes more often and they are often worse which means you have to change them at the first HINT of pee. Rinsing out those poopy diapers in the toilet and then washing those diapers. Even if you have the money for a service to clean them, you have to store them until they do a pick up. HOWEVER, it's probably cheaper (although when you factor in the energy costs for running a washer and dryer that extra load...) and MUCH better for the enviroment. Again, I LOVE the idea, but once you have more than one child it just doesn't seem practical!

from what I've read the cost is the same - its up to you if you're that environmentally conscious and if you want to be constantly rinsing etc. Some people I know have found services that do it for you that are relatively inexpensive too

This issue seems to be the up and coming thing. All I can say is EWWWW! I refuse to pay for a diaper service. I'd rather spend the money on diapers. I can't even clean the "accidental" poop that lands in Aliyah's underwear during these potty training days. I also know for a fact that if I switch to non-disposable, the chance of Marc changing a diaper is even more slim to NEVER. I understand the pros, but also am highly in favor of the Cons. It only makes my blood pressure rise as I contemplate how much more time consuming annoyance will be added to my already hectic life. No thank you! Good for those who do.

I don't think I would ever do it, but I think with a diaper service, it wouldn't be all that bad.

According to a professor that I worked with at the U of O (where everyone is environmentally friendly), she said that the chemicals used in diaper services are comparable to the amount of "damage" that disposable diapers create. I don't know if that is true or not but I believe her since she was super into that kind of stuff. Besides, the thought trying to scrape off those nasty soft poops into the toilet just grosses me out.

Besides, I have enough laundry to do as it is.

Seiously, WHY, would you do that to yourself????? WHY?????? Don't even think twice about cloth. I guarantee that you will be causing yourself more work and hardache. DON'T DO IT! Just say NO to cloth!
How's that for an opinion??? Of course I'll LOVE you either way, but I have to tell you that if you visit me, the chances of me changing one of those 'nasties' is ZIP, ZERO, ZILCH!

I say disposable. Seems like too much work and I can think of a lot of other efficient was to "Go Green". Maybe I'm just too lazy but I'm all about making things as easy as possible with children running all over the place :)

Okay, since everyone is for the ever so easy disposable diapers, I thought I would just throw in a few comments on cloth diapers since I had to use them for AMBER and ARIES and AARON and a few on AKONI and probably not any on APRIL, as disposable diapers were more available and affordable.
Maybe you could have a dozen cloth diapers to use for when you are only at home. Save the disposable diapers for going out, or going to Ambers (ha, ha). There is an item called a diaper liner. It is a thin piece of paper substance that is disposable and flushable. You put it in the diaper and it helps keep the harsh moisture away from babies skin and you just drop the whole poop issue in the toilet. It makes cloth diapers easier to use and way less messy. Maybe in the long run you will save some money and a little of the enviroment. So I say half and half. Side note: a wet cloth diaper may shorten the potty training time because when babies get close to training age, they don't like the feeling of a cold wet diaper, and they realize that going on the pot and keeping dry feels better. Just some more things to consider. Love Mom G

Screw the enviroment! Do you realize how disgusting that would be? You can't just toss them, you have to put them somewhere and then wash them, or have the cleaning service wash them, either way, you have to keep them somewhere untill they get are washed!! WHY?????
